As part of its greening mission: FDC Misamis and LGU Villanueva grow trees together

FDC Misamis Power Corporation has started fulfilling its commitment towards greening the environment by holding a tree-growing activity last April 4, along a newly-constructed road stretching from barangays Imelda to Kimaya in Villanueva.

Done in partnership with the Municipality of Villanueva, around 250 hardwood and fruit-bearing saplings were planted in initial fulfillment of FDC Misamis’ commitment to grow trees where feasible, all throughout the municipality.

The initiative is in line with FDC Misamis’ desire to not just plant trees that will eventually form part of its carbon sink, but also provide beneficiary barangays with a means to achieving food security, hence the inclusion of fruit-bearing trees.

FDC Misamis, a subsidiary of FDC Utilities, Inc., is building a 405 MW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) coal thermal plant within the Phividec Industrial Estate in the Municipality of Villanueva.

“Environmental stewardship through tree-growing and reforestation efforts is one of our priorities. But our tree-growing activities will not just be about greening the local environment but also providing community residents with a future food resource sufficient for family consumption,” says Mario Pangilinan, FDC Misamis Executive Vice President.

The fruit-bearing trees like tambis, balono, abana, mangosteen, jackfruit and bankok are all endemic to the area and thus can also prove profitable in five to ten years’ time.

Pangilinan hopes that, together with the Villanueva LGU, people in the community will help FDC Misamis in caring for these trees until they become productive and profitable.

Mayor Julio Uy of Villanueva, meanwhile, lauded FDC Misamis for partnering with the LGU in this tree planting endeavor.

Ang pagpananom ug kahoy, usa sa mga kalihokan nga atong ti-unay nga gihatagan ug dakong pagtagad ug bili tungod kay ang Lungsod sa Villanueva usa man ka Industrial Hub.  Kinahanglan nato balansehon ang kalambo-an sa atong komunidad, dili lang ang ekonomikanhon’g hisgutanan ang atong gahatagan ug pagtagad apan apil usab ang pag-amuma sa atong kinaiyahan (Tree planting is an activity that we truly promote and value since Villanueva is an Industrial Hub.  We need to balance development in our community and our concern is not just in economic terms but in caring for our environment as well),” the local chief executive said.
